Vo65 Oeann Race HighTide

A Man of Honour.

Most adventures in the last decades were done by French. The Rallye Paris-Dakar with Thierry Sabine as a founder for example or the first ascent of Annapurna or Makalu. But there is one field of activity which is much more dominated by French; sailing. There is no Ocean Race without a fearless sailor. From the OSTAR to the Vendee-Globe, the Route Du Rhum or the Mini Transt. All of them where driven by French and one of them is an outstanding character, Loick Peyron.

Yesterday we had the chance to meet him in the Casino at the Bayerischer Yacht Club in Starnberg. The BYC invited him as a Partner of BMW Yachtsport and the sailing community around Munich follows that exclusive invitation.

The audience was impressed by his stories. His sailing vita is really stunning. He startet with a Atlantic crossing with 19. Since that point he did all the offshore races you can imagine. Some of them with a crew and most of them solo. This year he will celebrate his 60th birthday.

Loick Peyron BYC BMW Yachtsport Loick Peyron BYC BMW Yachtsport

Of course the most German question came from the public; why you are never wearing a life-belt? Loick didn´t get the point, but the he explained how it is to work on such a boat and ended with a save answer: yeah, at the end, it´s save, wear a life-belt. Everything´s said.

Another question was, how he handles the loneliness at sea. His answer an gesture was as same cool as before. There is no loneliness. If there is no wind you have to plan and sleep. If there is wind you have to push the limit and if there´s too much wind, you have to fight. You see, it´s not getting boring.

Loick Peyron BYC BMW Yachtsport Loick Peyron BMW Yachtsport BYC

Above that he´s not just one of the best sailors ever, and a personal hero of mine, we also have the same respect of the pirates of the carribean. That´s funny cause I´m just interested in that pirates attitude. In a world of monarchy and a powerful church a pirates ship was kind of a democracy. I was looking at my pix when Loick startet his feelings about pirates and I thought, whoowhooo there´s another one who thinks like me. He added the fact, that these ships were a crew of people who were not there voluntarily. It was a good running crew and a captain with credibility and respect. Perhaps the first democracy in the modern age. At least the evening was much too short for all his stories and experiences.

The BYC and BMW Yachtsport were great hosts at that evening. Thanks for that and always fair winds.

Recap BOOT Düsseldorf / Inspiring Walkaround

3 days are much to less for a visit a the boat show in Düsseldorf. It´s OK when you don´t have appointments, than you run across the halls and get a catch everywhere. That was my experience years ago. Nowadays it´s quite difficult to look every booth of your choice in detail.

Nevertheless I will show you today my drive-by perspectives of the fair. At the end there is so much more to see. That year for example I haven´t been on any speech in one of the panels in the specific halls. That´s a must for next year.

Sunbeam Yachts Sunseeker Yachts BOOT Düsseldorf

Sarch Boot Düsseldorf Sarch Boot Düsseldorf

The SARCH S6 is a one-of Daysailer which is eye catching. It has all the elements you are searching for. The Fat-Head, wavepiercer bow, modern cockpit and gennaker. All in all it looks quite economical and rought. At the end, maybe the boat the mass will have for the weekend. Whereas Sunseeker is not something for the mass but at least fascinating.

On Saturday we had the logo launch of the Deutscher Segel Verband (DSV). That was quite free of emotions but there was at least a yummy cake. Do you see the difference to the previous logo?

Teakdeck Boot Düsseldorf Dehler Yachts Design Boot Düsseldorf

Wood is always a topic in boat design. There are so many kinds of wooden deck possibilities. That´s really amazing. What do you think about the round design of the new Dehler interior design? I like the outside of the yachts very much, but the inside is not so mine.

be Foil 16 Foiler catamaran boot düsseldorf Dehler 25 Refit Boot Düsseldorf

Yeah, that´s a plastic foiler for sailing schools, which is easy to foil and everything of the boat is very solid. Good idea. I like it. It´s also interesting for family-foiling at the weekend with kids. That´s the idea. The concrete opposite of foiling is the Dehler 25. The construction is around 30 years old and it was my dream when I was a child. In the 80ies it was also promoted as a family boat. Now the YACHT Magazine made a refit with high-tec materials and put it into the now. The result is amazing and the idea was outstanding for a conservatice print magazine.

The Foiling Dinghy

BOOT Düsseldorf / The Foiling Dinghy

Foiling and eMob on the water are two major topics at the fair that year. When we were cruising across Hall 15 I saw in the corner of my eye a fat-head North Sail on a dinghy and I had to stop. The lines were amazing. Like a LASER in 2019. Just a little bit smaller. The Design is outstanding. A Wavepiercer Bow, a fat T-Foil rudder and one foiler on each side. Both parts are made out of carbon fibre. The orange of the foils are made for me. I like those coloured gadgets. It´s called THE FOILING DINGHY, short TFD. That´s also the name in the North sail.

The Foiling Dinghy The Foiling Dinghy

I met Catarina who invented that boat together with her love, the A-Cat Pro-Sailor Thilo Keller. They are very enthusiastic and I can understand it. The boat is stunning and with a price of around 12.000 EUR fine. Think about that technology. It´s a sexy foiler, state of the art in sailing. Much better than a Laser and cheaper than a MELGES 14. OK both are bigger, but at the end, all of them are small boats for singel-handed sailing. Perfect. If I will be critical, yeah, the finish of the hull and the deck is not perfect, but we will see how the first „TFDs“ will do their job.

The Foiling Dinghy The Foiling Dinghy

I think it´s the right boat at the right time. I still think about a new olympic class when I see it. Above that it is easy to handle and fast to sail if needed. I will keep an eye on it and in season 2019 the first boats will be available at Steinlechner / Ammersee; my lake. Hopefully I will have the chance to get a ride with it.

Garcia BOOT Düsseldorf 2019

BOOT Düsseldorf / GARCIA Yachts

GARCIA-Yachts, nobody really needs that. Quite the opposite is the truth. Everybody should have a exploration yacht. If you have a feeling for adventures, a Land Rover or a UNIMOG, than the Garcia is your thing. For me it wasn´t a must-see at the boat show, but now I have to say you have to see it. It can change your ambitions in sailing. Perhaps you see yourself in the arctic after you have seen the boat.

Garcia BOOT Düsseldorf 2019 Garcia BOOT Düsseldorf 2019

My sailing area has to be warm an it should be done without shoes, but with a drink in your hand. Nevertheless I was standing beside that huge yacht, made out of aluminum (Have a look at the video from my „Bow-Dive“ and the „Deckwalk„) and I was impressed. The yacht has a brutal design, almost martial. When I was aboard my senses gave me the feeling of beeing save. Everything on that yacht tells you, that it is not certified for the ocean, it is build for the ocean. The dimensions of the winch, or the layout of the cockpit; everything is driven by perfection. It´s not a beauty in a romantic way. It is a beauty in the sense of a MB Trac. After that first impression your mind clicks, and you think about the arctic. You get the feeling of beeing autarkic. Planet Blue invites you for exploring. Your great adventure will begin. The high latitudes are calling.

Garcia BOOT Düsseldorf 2019 Garcia BOOT Düsseldorf 2019

In the inside you will see big heating systems. Real radiators, never seen on a boat. The saloon ist built up very high to see the enviroment better than on a normal layout. Normal is nothing on a Garcia. As expected there is a basic design of the interior, but you can customize it for your life. Everything is possible from a workshop cabin to a pilot-bed in your office cabin. Everything you need could be realized. Really stunning.

Garcia BOOT Düsseldorf 2019 Garcia BOOT Düsseldorf 2019

The coach roof is build in composite and it looks rough as on a IMOCA Racer. At the end, I´m really excited by that yacht and I´m far far away from a expedition.

Copa Del Rey – sailing between the king and the world league.

Copa Del Rey – sailing between the king and the world league.

Copa Del Rey is one of the most prestigious regattas in the Mediterranean yachting calendar. A Pinnacle event in sailing year by year in the bay of Palma, Mallorca.

It sounds quite cool when Sascha asked me if I want to be part of his „Sayonar Light Race Team“ for the Copa del Rey in 2018. That sounds great to me and with my experience from the Palmavela last year I said yep, for sure. Especially cause Sascha knows how to handle boats, races and a crew of soldiers of fortune.

The main actors of the regatta are the beautiful Island of Mallorca, his Majesty King Felipe VI, an nearly 200 boats and their amazing owners and crews. Some of them you will know from the FORBES list, but´s that´s another story.

It all began and how could it be otherwise at the „Ballermann“ in El Arenal. There we pick up of the first crew member. As expected he was still in another galaxy, which was quite good, cause that´s the reason why he is still alive. You know, drunk people always have a guardian angel. But more about this later on.

In El Arenal we get on the boat to bring it to Palma. Unfortunately we stopped after 2min very unsoft, cause we grounded in the marina. That was a pity but with our draught of 2,60m not so abnormal. Max, remember our first crew member, wasn´t fast enough to absorb the sudden stop. Perhaps he was still absorbed by the Ballermann Experienced. He had really big luck. Max stands in the middle of the cockpit and made a backflip down the gangway, where he landed on his head. The muscle relaxant of drunk people is really outstanding. After that shock and unnecessary first experience we started with a drink an get the boat to Real Club Nautico Palma.

The upcoming race days were quite similar day by day. In total it was physically quite hard. We get up in our stunning city loft in palma, had breakfast at about 09 am. After that delicious part we prepared the boat, looked around in the yacht club an we enjoyed the feeling there, which is amazing.

Our tacticians get their infos in the briefing and we went out to the starting line. Don´t underestimate the time you need to be at that point. It needs at least an hour.

We were registrated in ORC 1 and most of the time we had a few other starting groups before us. That was cool, cause we can see the start of the ClubSwan50, or the Maxi Racers, which is really stunning. The sound of the winches ist awesome when they get on course. It sounds like the buzz of a dinosaur.

The course itself was classic, up and down, two rounds and two races a day. Above that there is one long distance race. In total we had eleven races. The windspeed were about 8 to 13kn every day and 37° everyday. Perfect conditions. Don´t forget to drink enough. I don´t know how many litres water we drunk at sea. Enough I think and the funny thing, in that conditions you don´t have to pee the whole day. It is so hot and you will transpire everything.

Within the regatta I often pinched myself. Is it really me, racing between King Felipe VI and the enormous maxi yachts like MOMO or Protheus. Above you will see there the leading champs steering the TP52, the GC32, or the Club Swan fleets. At the end we were not compatible against all that pros with their unbelievable machines. Don´t be the last in our class, was our task. At least we get that in every leg. Just in the last race we had a difficulties at the windward mark. We hoist the gennaker, it gets twisted and we had to jibe. It don´t came over and it was catched by a damaged sail batten in the jib and in a second the whole gennaker was split into two pieces. The only thing which we could do was a call to the race control; Sayonar Light 47 is retired. That was really a sad moment.

The whole week was a stunning experience in a awesome setting. Above that it was quite cool to get on track with the pros. With just one day of training and not with our material we had great results, an outstanding team spirit and a wonderful time on that beautiful island of Mallorca.

IMOCA OPEN 60

BMW will participate a challenging Project.

BMW Yachtsport: #TeamMalizia will take the chance to get the victory in the Vendée Globe 2020. BMW is partnering the Campaign of the Yacht Club of Monaco (YCM). Within that partnership Boris Herrmann from Hamburg/GER will be at the helm of the IMOCA OPEN 60 at that single handed sailing race around the globe.

IMOCA Fighting the Elements BMW i8 Boris Herrmann

Boris is very experienced in extreme sailing, a strong character and very personable. These are good skills to get such a racer around the globe, which don´t any mistakes.

#TeamMalizia is sailing to success under the flag of the Yacht Club of Monaco, which was founded by Pierre Casiraghi. The youngest son of Princess Caroline von Monaco. Both guys are sailing a lot together to get a feeling for the „RoadToVendee. That´s a long way, there´s a lot to do. Not just races, there ist also a record attempt next week. They will get the best time from Marseille (FRA) to Cartagena (ESP).

IMOCA OPEN 60 IMOCA Elements Cockpit

BMW announced their partnership that days in Munich. They will start with support in technology and want to be a reliable partner,  also in stormy times. Sounds great. For BMW as a mobility provider and car manufacturer is that a real challenge and a source of new initiatives. BMW ist active in sailing since 2002. In the noughties they invented the very successful BMW Sailing Cup, which was a very professional amateur sailing race serie. 2010 was a highlight in their sailing history. Together with ORACLE they won the America´s Cup with a stunning Trimaran. That was really a great show. Seven Years later in 2017 they lost against the unbeatable Team of New Zealand. We will see if BMW will participate at the upcoming America´s Cup Challenge in 2021. Right now we have no statement of BMW regarding a attendance.

Above that we know that HUGO BOSS also takes part at the Vendée Globe in 2021 with their skipper Alex Thomson. It remains to be seen, if Mercedes will support Alex Thomson Racing. If they do, we have an automotive battle on the oceans. stay tuned.

Bracenet Bikini

Recap BOOT Düsseldorf / Bracenet – a statement for the ocean.

Bracenet Taucher Fischernetz Bracenet Taucher Fischernetz

Bracenet Manufaktur Bracenet Armband

Bracente Team BOOT Düsseldorf Bracenet Red Fishnet

Bracent Lettershop Bracenet promo messestand

Nautors Swan Mock-up

BOOT Düsseldorf / Nautors Swan 54 + Mock-up

When you think about a yard in Finnland than every sailor thinks about Nautors Swan. A name with magic, history and always a step ahead. Since decades they produce super yachts, high-end cruising yachts and carbon performance sailing boats. Last year the launched the CLUB SWAN 50 at the BOOT Düsseldorf and it gets the title yacht of the year in 2018. This year we get another high-light; SWAN presented the SWAN 54. A real blue water cruiser for gentle sailing. With its 54ft it has a ideal and moderate size. It´s better in the water than the 45ft boats and not too big. Perfect handling, perfect size. It can be sailied by a couple or a family. Of course I´m biased, cause I had two milestones of my Life on a SWAN 51.Which was quite the same size.

SWAN 54 SWAN 54 Winch

Back to the boat. We have a classic design with a modern look and a carbon rigging. Yes that´s right and yes it´s not a bargain. No worries we don´t get lost in details right now. A SWAN is more than that.

Nevertheless there are a few specs of this stunning yacht we would like to mark. The carbon shrouds, the carbon mast and the fast 3D sails from North Sail and at least the big cockpit is awesome.

The interior is a harmonious mix of modern and traditional. I like the light wood and the pure interior. The only thing which I don´t understand and what I just see in contemporary Swans are the chairs in the saloon. If you are sailing you have to pack it anywhere and for having dinner they are always a handicap. I don´t get them.

SWAN 54 Masters Bedroom SWAN 54 Saloon

SWAN 54 Pantry SWAN 54 Aft Cabin

I would like to sit here with the family or also with a few girls. Yes you can also use that yacht as a players mansion. It´s not just nice and cool, no it´s also very sexy and made for that.

The booth of SWAN was placed at the same place like 2017. The Layout was a little bit different. Instead of two yachts they had the SWAN 54 and a Mock-up of a SWAN 65.

Nautors Swan Mock-up Nautors Swan Mock-up

Nautors Swan Mock-up Nautors Swan Mock-up

I´ve never seen something like that on a fair, not to mention anywhere else. That´s really amazing to see how the designer will work on the boat. It ist a 1:1 interior scale mock-up of the new Swan 65 at the BOOT Düsseldorf boat show.

Nautors Swan Mock-up Nautors Swan Mock-up

After the walkthrough I understand the philosophy of Swan much better. It´s so cool to see the different materials and ideas which are possible. The owner can decide together with designer, which is the best layout for his semi-custom-build yacht.

Yacht of the Year BMW 7series Nautors Swan

That´s awesome to see how a yacht like that will build and designed. Above that the stand is very welcoming as always. You can feel the luxurious mind of Swan, combined with performance. Everything is real in spite of luxury, but not posh and bling bling. That´s the thin red line which this yard from Finnland makes it so relevant and gives humility to all the sailors on the oceans of that planet.

Ultra Marine Anchor

BOOT Düsseldorf / The Mystery of Anchoring.

The Ultra Marine Anchor, named ULTRanchor with its revolutionary technology was really new to me. The ULTRAanchor looks quite different to others and it acts different. Manoeuvring is always a special thing and everybody of us had sleeples nights while laying at anchor. The Ultra Marine could be a solution. In my whole sailing life I´ve never thought about the anchor itself; more about the process of anchoring.

Ultra Marine Anchor Ultra Marine Anchor

By chance I saw the booth of ULTRA MARINE at the fair and I was surprised. Giovanni Canu from ULTRA MARINE explained me the new idea of the anchor. They had a interactive display on which you can test the impact of different anchors. That was impressive and very funny. The anchor is really better than the others. That´s amazing. Have you ever thought about your anchor? Not me.

What´s the mystery with it. The anchor has a special balance. It´s always in the right position. Also when the wind is changing,  the Ultra Marine turns into the right position. Above the balance, we have one other differentiator; the wings at the bottom of the anchor. This side wing plates actually help the anchor bury itself deeper when pulled laterally due to a changing wind or tide. They also act to stabilize the anchor horizontally as it penetrates the seabed. There are a view more details which are really awesome. At the end all that creative ideas let the anchor digging deeper. You really can see and feel it when you test ist at the display. That´s really awesome and unbelievable.

Ultra Marine Anchor Ultra Marine Anchor

In the meantime the have more than 12.000 clients and after I saw that anchor I also recognized it on super yachts like SOLARIS, but that´s another story. Unfortunately I haven´t look at the anchor at any time on a yacht or sailing boat. That Boat Fair in Düsseldorf changed my mindset. In the futur I will have a look at it, for sure.
