Maybe it´s the proximity to the lakes near Munich, that I have a passion for Daycruisers and Daysailers. I like the minimal setting, the performance and at least the possibility for living aboard. Whereupon a classic daycruiser like a TRIAS or a MELGES 24 is not built for overnights. In the past the International 806 was the definition of a boat for the weekend. At the end the International 806 is a TRIAS with a cabin and the technical status of the 70ies. I know, all the H-Boot fans will give me beef now. No, I have not forget you. Unfortunately I´ve just never found the way to the H. That´s a personal thing. Perhaps it is too familial for my.

We had a few posts regarding the DOMANI Daycruiser on HighTide and Insta over the last years. It is still the most stylo boat under 10 meters in the competitive environment. Ideal for Lakes an the Inshore Area. On the Boat Fair BOOT Düsseldorf 2019 we had another look at the fair and there was a very special DOMANI S30. Paintet in a special grey with deck a deck cushion in Britisch Racing Green. It´s a stunning combination, especially when you combine it with dazzling colours for e.g. the traveller.
Above that DOMANI YACHTS is leading in electric mobility aboard. You can get the Boat with a Torqeedo Cruise Pod. Now we are back at the perfect performance cruiser for a lake. Imagine that, isn´t that a perfect combination.
Unfortunately I haven´t been on the boat till now, perhaps I can tell you more that days, cause the wharf has a sales week at the Lake of Starnberg this week. The conditions are fine, but could be better. We are expecting just 5kn of wind with a cloudy sky. We will see.
Most adventures in the last decades were done by French. The Rallye Paris-Dakar with Thierry Sabine as a founder for example or the first ascent of Annapurna or Makalu. But there is one field of activity which is much more dominated by French; sailing. There is no Ocean Race without a fearless sailor. From the OSTAR to the Vendee-Globe, the Route Du Rhum or the Mini Transt. All of them where driven by French and one of them is an outstanding character, Loick Peyron.
Yesterday we had the chance to meet him in the Casino at the Bayerischer Yacht Club in Starnberg. The BYC invited him as a Partner of BMW Yachtsport and the sailing community around Munich follows that exclusive invitation.
The audience was impressed by his stories. His sailing vita is really stunning. He startet with a Atlantic crossing with 19. Since that point he did all the offshore races you can imagine. Some of them with a crew and most of them solo. This year he will celebrate his 60th birthday.
Of course the most German question came from the public; why you are never wearing a life-belt? Loick didn´t get the point, but the he explained how it is to work on such a boat and ended with a save answer: yeah, at the end, it´s save, wear a life-belt. Everything´s said.
Another question was, how he handles the loneliness at sea. His answer an gesture was as same cool as before. There is no loneliness. If there is no wind you have to plan and sleep. If there is wind you have to push the limit and if there´s too much wind, you have to fight. You see, it´s not getting boring.
Above that he´s not just one of the best sailors ever, and a personal hero of mine, we also have the same respect of the pirates of the carribean. That´s funny cause I´m just interested in that pirates attitude. In a world of monarchy and a powerful church a pirates ship was kind of a democracy. I was looking at my pix when Loick startet his feelings about pirates and I thought, whoowhooo there´s another one who thinks like me. He added the fact, that these ships were a crew of people who were not there voluntarily. It was a good running crew and a captain with credibility and respect. Perhaps the first democracy in the modern age. At least the evening was much too short for all his stories and experiences.
The BYC and BMW Yachtsport were great hosts at that evening. Thanks for that and always fair winds.
Sailing is a complex thing. Every adjustable screw has its relevants and on such a boat of the ORC Class, there are many screws. If every screw is running you will have a perfect match. But if there is just one screw not really running you will have a major problem. In that race weekend we had that one screw which was not running. Our underwater hull was full of shells and vegetable cover. We don´t thought that this could be so hard after a few weeks, but on the other hand the boat was laying there since november at least. Perhaps SAYONARA had a few trips, but that was to less. What can we do? We try to do it with a carpet around the hull, but that wasn´t a hack. We did the race with all the natural cover. That was hard to see that we didn´t get the target speed. As always we also had a few mistakes in tactic and maneuvers; that means minute by minute loss.
Nevermind, it was a perfect kick-off for the season 2019. The crew was brillant as always. The mood was impressive and the Conditions on Mallorca are brilliant. Perfect surrounding within the Real Club Nautico Palma and the city of palma. At least the crew dinner in the evening is one reason to be part of Sayonara Racing Squadron.
In the meantime the hull get´s cleaned and SAYONARA LIGHT is prepared for the next race. Stay tuned to get all the reviews of a race season on Mallorca at the Real Club Nautico Palma. In the meantime I really feel like home there. It is always a good Feeling to walk into the club and smell that typical artificial odor HERMES in the insight of the RCNO ambience.
Where to stay?
At that time I found a very cosy and stylo Hotel not far away from the RCNP. At least maximum 10min away from the yacht harbour by foot. The Hotel is called Palau Sa Font and is located in the heart of Palma. The rooms are pleasant and the bathroom is stunning, quite new and modern. The service is excellent. We came always quite late and we get a warm welcome. The breakfast is a good standard, especially with the newspapers.
The Daycruiser SUPERLOUNGER 8500 was one of the most citied boats of the BOOT Düsseldorf in 2019. Everybody was captivated by it´s progressive design. We had a spy view before the fair was opened and we were excited. The lines are new, the colour unique and the interior is different. Especially the hull is really radical and looks like a IMOCA Racer. Above that there are all the things you want to have. There´s a wavepiercer bow, a Fat-Head, double-rudder and last not least a wheel. Really? All that on a Daycruiser? That´s what we need. Finally one brave man built a performance-cruiser for the weekend. A Daysailor which is fast, very stylo and there´s ist no need to compare with others in the sense of one-design. It´s build for the sailors who will have a fast boat for the daytrip, with a performance and the sense for luxury and chilling. For that clientele they installed a champagne cooler. By the way, if there is no wind, the SuperLounger is driven by a electric inboarder. You see, e eMobility is really a topic at the fair.
Where do I have to sign. My senses get activatet. There is just one question. Why does it have to be in aluminum? Is there a chance to get it in GFK? No, there´s no chance. It´s just available in Alu, cause this little yacht is the passion of the wharf named ALUFLEET. They are experts for working boats. The Speedlounger 8500 is their passionate boat which they build up to show what is possible.
At the end you can sail in December on a Bavarian Lake and with the aluminum finish you will have the feeling of arctic sailing in south of Munich. All in all it´s a perfect boat, in a cool size with a rough look in detail. That means, you have to love the aluminum.
Bald beginnt wieder die Segel Saison im 5Seen Land. Grund genug, sich nochmals mit dem Bayerischen Wetter zu beschäftigen. Da ist es natürlich großartig, wenn der Heimatverein Dießen zum Wetterseminar einlädt. In Bildern kann ich nun gar nicht soviel berichten. Das war einer der Abende, wo man einfach dabei gewesen sein muss. Der ehemalige Leiter des Meteorologischen Observatoriums Hohenpeißenberg des Deutschen Wetterdienstes (DWD), Herr Dr. Peter Winkler führte zusammen mit Carina Eickmann durch den Abend.
Ich selbst sehe die Wetterprognose ja immer wie eine MaFo im Marketing; Du musst es checken, am Ende aber entscheidest Du, ob die raus gehst. Das Wetter ist ein chaotisches System mit vielen Faktoren.
#SeriousFact des Abends für mich war die Erkenntnis, dass ich an einem schönen Sommertag z.B. in Garmisch die Luft aus München atme. Eigentlich logisch, nur diese Gedanken macht man sich eben nicht. Zur Erklärung. Der Ammersee ist immer kälter als der Alpenraum. Dort steigt die warme Luft auf und zieht die kalte Luft des Sees nach. So entsteht der Nordwind. Logisch, das wussten wir. Bei Nacht ist es dann genau andersrum. Daher haben wir in der Früh den Südwind am Ammersee. Das ist das Alpine Pumpen, um in der Sprache der Bayerischen Wetterfrösche zu bleiben.
Das erklärt eben auch, warum Pestizide in Bergseen festgestellt werden. Laut Peter Winkler wurde an so manchem Bergsee eine höhere Pestizidbelastung gemessen als dort, wo die Chemie gespritzt wurde; das ist schon hart. Überhaupt hat Dr. Winkler eine gute Art, die Themen rüberzubringen. Da würde ich glatt nochmals hingehen, wenn er nochmals spricht. Vielleicht gibt sich ja nochmals eine Chance, wenn der Heimatverein nochmals einen Event dieser Art organisiert. Ich selbst habe davon ja über einen Freunde erfahren, der in der Segler Gemeinschaft Utting (SGU).

BRENTA is a always a sign of style. It´s pure, functional and it delivers performance. The big boats of the wharf are always a statement on the oceans. Above that there are the smaller ones, the daycruisers which are at least stunning.
What do you know about the wharf? I was wired, cause I saw quite two similar boats at the fair. Just with a difference of 3ft. Both are called Brenta in a way. On the other hand the formal name of both stands were B-Yachts. Strange isn´t it? I tried to get an explanation and I got it. Unfortunately I don´t get the point. I can´t explain it to you. It sounds wired and strange. That´s not the thing you wanna hear, I know. Give me a try to explain.
Everybody knows BRENTA, yeah its a massive chain of mountains in Italy. The sailors among us will think about the yachts and perhaps that amazing Italian Millionaire who also owns a Brenta. O.K. Back to the story. At the end there ist no wharf called Brenta, but there is Luca Brenta. He´s an convinced yachtsman an designer. He also made a designs for Wally and anytime he did his own boat together with his partner Michael Gillhofer. After years of collaboration, they decided to go their own way. At least everybody of them keep their spirit and they build their yachts very well. One of them is based in Austria and the other company is still in Italy, run by Luca Brenta´s daughter.
Both boats looks quite same. The cockpit layout, the deck or the interior; quite similar. I can´t see any differences. Indeed I suspect that they will have the same performance on the water. If you love clean hotels, services and no hassle; charter is the key. So do I. That´s also fine when you are not living at the seaside, in Barcelona, Boston oder Kiel. Above that it´s cheaper to do the charter. Yeah we are talking from quite normal charter between the Caribbean sea or the Mediterranean. We are not talking about a WALLY Charter, or getting the ENDEAVOUR for a week.
That´s cool, that´s fine and than you see the VIKO S35 at the BOOT in Düsseldorf, and the calculator on your iPhone ist counting by itself. What happened? You got pulse when you saw the lines of the „right size boat“ with a dumping price. All in all we´re talking about 100.000 EUR, ready for sailing. Suddenly you don´t think about the next charter trip. Your mind is checking the next possible mooring area.
The boat is stunning with it outstanding and progressive design. There are sexy edges and a modern light interior. The look of a performance cruiser. Compared with that price it is really a boat which you will have. The workmanship is much better than some of the more expensive competitors. That´s a deal for a 5 years project. Buy it, use it as often you can and sell it before it´s getting stressfull and expensive like all older boats.
The wharf itself is in the middle of poland. Maybe you know all the boats of them. They are much smaller, but they all have typical design lines. I look at them till years, cause of their design ideas. Unfortunately I had no interest till now, cause in my eyes the focus was too much on living aboard on small boats; keyword headroom an toilet on too less length.
Above that there are the doors to the front cabin. They are opening into the saloon. That´s a thing which just the prototype has. The serie will oben in the front cabin. Like the way it is like on a Dufour 350 GL. Which ist the quality competitor.
The only thing which I don´t like is the very high coaming. That´s not my style, but at the end it´s comfortabel, especially with kids. Have a look if you need a cheap alternative instead of charter. Tell me about your considerations. Write me on Alex@HighTide.cc
eMob is one of the hot topics at the boat fair in DüDo. No wonder that Nautors Swan adopt that topic sovereign with style at the premier of the SWAN 36. Maybe the right move to make eMob to a force on the water.
At the end it´s a TriOperation. BMW i supplies the batteries, Torqeedo builts the eMotor and both parts will find their place in the race yacht itself. The premier will take place in May, direct in racing.
The innovative electrified drive of the ClubSwan 36 race yacht is to be powered by the latest generation of lithium ion batteries by BMW i. The zero-emissions drive system in the new model will incorporate the specialist skills of BMW i, the electric boat drive manufacturer Torqeedo and the Finnish yacht maker Nautor’s Swan.
The ClubSwan 36 as a one-design carbon race yacht that combines all the advantages of dinghy and keelboat sailing. For this particular project, Torqeedo enhanced their Cruise 10.0 electric drive to incorporate BMW i battery technology.
The high-performance batteries that power the BMW i3 and i8, are already an established component of Torqeedo’s DEEP BLUE motor systems. The underwater propeller acts as a hydro generator while the yacht is sailing but disappears into the hull during regattas. That´s sounds strange to me. OK I get the Idea. You will always have strange feeling when the prop is out? It´s just performing in racing when the prop is in? Ok, at a normal sailing boat the prop is always out, which makes it slower; it´s the feeling, you know. If you can put it in, I will always sail without the propeller.
We will see. After May we will have the first results how it works. After that the Club Swan 36 will be at the Rolex Cup in St Tropez in June, and the Copa del Rey in Palma de Mallorca in July. Mallorca will also host the first one-design regatta with five boats of this type in October of this year.

3 days are much to less for a visit a the boat show in Düsseldorf. It´s OK when you don´t have appointments, than you run across the halls and get a catch everywhere. That was my experience years ago. Nowadays it´s quite difficult to look every booth of your choice in detail.
Nevertheless I will show you today my drive-by perspectives of the fair. At the end there is so much more to see. That year for example I haven´t been on any speech in one of the panels in the specific halls. That´s a must for next year.
The SARCH S6 is a one-of Daysailer which is eye catching. It has all the elements you are searching for. The Fat-Head, wavepiercer bow, modern cockpit and gennaker. All in all it looks quite economical and rought. At the end, maybe the boat the mass will have for the weekend. Whereas Sunseeker is not something for the mass but at least fascinating.
On Saturday we had the logo launch of the Deutscher Segel Verband (DSV). That was quite free of emotions but there was at least a yummy cake. Do you see the difference to the previous logo?
Wood is always a topic in boat design. There are so many kinds of wooden deck possibilities. That´s really amazing. What do you think about the round design of the new Dehler interior design? I like the outside of the yachts very much, but the inside is not so mine.
Yeah, that´s a plastic foiler for sailing schools, which is easy to foil and everything of the boat is very solid. Good idea. I like it. It´s also interesting for family-foiling at the weekend with kids. That´s the idea. The concrete opposite of foiling is the Dehler 25. The construction is around 30 years old and it was my dream when I was a child. In the 80ies it was also promoted as a family boat. Now the YACHT Magazine made a refit with high-tec materials and put it into the now. The result is amazing and the idea was outstanding for a conservatice print magazine.
Foiling and eMob on the water are two major topics at the fair that year. When we were cruising across Hall 15 I saw in the corner of my eye a fat-head North Sail on a dinghy and I had to stop. The lines were amazing. Like a LASER in 2019. Just a little bit smaller. The Design is outstanding. A Wavepiercer Bow, a fat T-Foil rudder and one foiler on each side. Both parts are made out of carbon fibre. The orange of the foils are made for me. I like those coloured gadgets. It´s called THE FOILING DINGHY, short TFD. That´s also the name in the North sail.
I met Catarina who invented that boat together with her love, the A-Cat Pro-Sailor Thilo Keller. They are very enthusiastic and I can understand it. The boat is stunning and with a price of around 12.000 EUR fine. Think about that technology. It´s a sexy foiler, state of the art in sailing. Much better than a Laser and cheaper than a MELGES 14. OK both are bigger, but at the end, all of them are small boats for singel-handed sailing. Perfect. If I will be critical, yeah, the finish of the hull and the deck is not perfect, but we will see how the first „TFDs“ will do their job.
I think it´s the right boat at the right time. I still think about a new olympic class when I see it. Above that it is easy to handle and fast to sail if needed. I will keep an eye on it and in season 2019 the first boats will be available at Steinlechner / Ammersee; my lake. Hopefully I will have the chance to get a ride with it.
